MAD was founded in 1956 as the Museum of Contemporary Crafts. The museum's current building, designed by Brad Cloepfil of Allied Works Architecture, opened in 2008. MAD's permanent collection includes more than 2,000 objects made across a wide range of media, including textiles, metalwork, woodwork, glass, and ceramics. The museum’s ever-changing exhibitions and installations feature work by both well-known and emerging artists and designers from around the world.
The museum’s mission is to support and exhibit the work of contemporary artists and designers, to educate the public about the importance of craft and design, and to preserve the legacy of craft and design history. MAD’s permanent collection is made by 3,000 artists and designers from over 50 countries. It is the only museum in the United States devoted exclusively to the exhibition of contemporary craft, design, and art made from traditional and new materials. MAD’s exhibitions, publications, and public programs are dedicated to the idea that making and learning are essential to creativity and human progress. The Museum believes that through engagement with contemporary artists and designers, audiences of all ages and backgrounds are invited.

Recent exhibitions have included "The Future of Craft," Beth Lipman: Collective Elegy and The Fisher Dollhouse: A Venetian Palazzo in Miniature.
Some of the most exciting exhibitions and installations currently on view at MAD include Bracelets from the Helen Williams Drutt Family Collection, Highlights from the Goblet Collection, graphics of Anna Kulachek’s Paper Shapes, Judith Schaechter’s stained-glass windows, and more.

MAD's artist studios are located in the heart of the Chelsea art district, providing residents with convenient access to some of the world's best art galleries, museums, and cultural institutions.
The studios are generously sized and are fully equipped with sinks, storage, and exhibition space. The program offers opportunities to create, experiment and collaborate with other artists in a stimulating environment. Studios are available for a variety of disciplines, including fiber art, metalwork, woodworking, papermaking, glassblowing and more. The Museum's artist studios are open to the public.
