Named for composer Richard Rodgers, it opened on February7, 1925, as the Alvin Theatre, with the play The Gold Diggers. It was designed by architect Herbert J. Krapp. The Alvin Theatre was the first Broadway theatre to be named after a composer.

It is one of the 41 theaters in New York City that are currently owned or operated by Jujamcyn Theaters, a theatrical production company.

 At the time, it was the largest legitimate theatre in the world, with a seating capacity of 2,200.  It was renamed the Richard Rodgers Theatre in 1990, in honor of the legendary composer, Richard Rodgers.

The Richard Rodgers Theatre has been home to some of the most popular Broadway shows in history, including The King and I, South Pacific, and The Sound of Music.
